Munich
I have no doubt that I am really on a seven month vacation right now. Yesterday, we all took a trip to Munich (München auf Deutsch) for the day. The trip began at the Pinakothek Der Moderne which was full of amazing modern art. There are few things that allow me feel my humanity, so visible, the way that modern art does.
My Group, all wondering what I am doing taking a picture of them
Woman and Mandolin
The Drummer
The Year 2000 -- This artist believed in a millennium apocalypse! We sure proved him wrong! eh.
The Urinals-- no, really, these were the fancy german urinals used in the museum. Don't ask what I was doing in the mens room though... actually I made a friend take this for me : )
And then I took off with some friends, ate a very german vegetarian lunch (cheese and bread soaked in pickle juice?), and looked around Munich. From what I saw, I believe that Munich is just a very classy European shopping area (even starbucks, prada, puma, "Couture and Fashion Shop!," and a distant godforsaken walmart were there) meets beautiful churches, towers, and old government buildings that take your breath away when you look up.
The frozen fountains were my favorite thing in the entire city.
And the day ended at the Haufbräuhof, one of the (if not, the) most famous breweries in Germany. Everyone goes here, takes pictures of the oomph band, buys the sweatshirt, buys a liter of beer, and goes home happy. The beer I am holding in this picture is larger than my entire head (!), and one of the best ways ever to prepare for a long bus ride home. Again, you can see more pictures here.
When we got home, I cooked curried vegetables and went to the movies with Rory and Lirra to see _Lemony Snicket_ in German. Before the film started, there was a string of cigarette commercials, few which actually showed people smoking. My favorite was the Marlboro commercial: cowboys, the wild west, horses, attractive men, the sun setting, and the phrase spoken in clear english "city boys want to be country boys" repeated the entire time with an expressionless voice.
